On Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 5 PM, Matthew T. Martens, J.D. will deliver a lecture on his book Reforming Criminal Justice: A Christian Proposal. His book, published by Crossway in 2023, tackles the topic of criminal justice from a thoroughly biblical and experientially informed perspective. Not only does it critique the American justice system, but it also extends a Christian ideal for how mechanisms such as due process, impartiality, and proportionality could be used to foster truly biblical justice that empowers Christians to love the criminally victimized and accused. His lecture promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking window into the current state of the justice system and a roadmap for seeking Christian reform.
His work has spanned from pro bono work in areas such as religious liberty and criminal cases, to prosecuting capital murder and drug trafficking, to representing churches effected by closure orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, all while obtaining a Masters in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. He currently lives in northern Virginia with his wife and their youngest son. He and his wife are members of Capitol Hill Baptist in Washington D.C.
Martens has been a lawyer for close to three decades and has served as both a criminal defense attorney and a federal prosecutor. After graduating from the University of North Carolina school of law in 1996, and spending two years in Washington D.C. serving as a law clerk for a federal court of appeals judge and then to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist at the US Supreme Court., he now works for one of the world’s largest law firms, and teaches Legal Ethics at Duke Law School.
The lecture will be free and open to the public, and childcare will be provided. For more information on Sunday Night Theology, and to listen to past lectures, please visit our website. Any questions may be submitted to [email protected]
