Christ Church West Chester is excited to have the opportunity to host Thomas Terry later this month to preach at our Sunday morning gathering, and return that evening to teach on beauty at our October Sunday Night Theology.

Currently serving as Lead Pastor at Trinity Church  in Portland, OR, where he lives with his wife and children, Terry is well suited to speak on the topic of beauty. As the founder of the record label Humble Beast, Thomas Terry is a patron of the arts, and not only a patron, but an artist himself. He writes and performs spoken-word, is a poet, and is a member of the music group Beautiful Eulogy. He has been a long-time advocate for a Christian approach to art that sees the creation of beauty as an inextricable aspect of the cultural mandate given to the first humans, and as a redemptive potentiality to be harnessed by regenerate persons. As Terry succinctly said in his talk, A Call for Creative Orthodoxy, “Because of the redeeming work of Christ it is possible for us to experience orthodox creativity, the way we get to orthodox creativity is through orthodox theology… for those who are in Christ he is rebuilding our structure… to create more and more in the ways we were intended”.

In the morning, Thomas Terry will preach from Mark 4:35-41, and will return in the evening to deliver a lecture entitled: “Beauty: The Way the Gospel and the Arts Interact” for Sunday Night Theology. In the lecture, Thomas Terry will explore how both theologically informed creativity and beautifully displayed theology together are a powerful witness to the power of the gospel and the glory of our Triune God

This lecture will take place on Sunday, October 26, at 5 PM, at Christ Church West Chester. His lecture, which will be followed by at time of Q&A, is free and open to the public, and childcare will be provided. For a schedule of future lectures, click here.
